St John of God Richmond Hospital

Richmond, New South Wales

A New Benchmark

The St John of God Richmond Hospital is a private mental health hospital northwest of Sydney, first established in 1953. The existing facility consisted of a variety of buildings of varying ages that had been expanded and developed over time, including the historically significant Belmont House, built in 1892.

STH were appointed as lead consultant for this redevelopment of the hospital to create a new benchmark in mental health care.

The redevelopment redefines the existing site with four distinct residential pavilions that give patients rooms with views out towards the dense canopies of the Blue Mountains or towards Belmont House. Embracing a village feel with several pavilions grouped around terraces and outdoor courtyards allow Belmont House to become the centre piece of the facility once again.

Residents have the opportunity to gather in shared spaces, such as the dining areas, café, and alfresco spaces, fostering social connections and reducing feelings of isolation often experienced by patients. The wellness centre offers an indoor swimming pool, gym, and yoga suite, encouraging residents to prioritise their physical and mental well-being.

The St. John of God Richmond Hospital redevelopment has created a haven that inspires trust and promotes empowerment, assisting residents in reconnecting with their loved ones and communities. Using best practice, residents are empowered to embark on their healing journeys realising their full potential to live their best lives.

The redevelopment’s holistic approach combines comprehensive support systems with a nurturing environment to equip residents with the resilience, confidence, and skills necessary to thrive in their communities.
