The lower floors consist of the main entry, retail tenancy space, radiology and pathology departments, 16 operating theatres, CSSD and 50 place recovery unit, alongside South Australia’s first privately-owned 24-hour emergency department. Inpatient accommodation is provided on levels 6 to 11, comprising 300 private single rooms with ensuites, 20-bed Intensive Care Unit, 10-bed High Dependency Unit, 12-bed Cardiovascular Unit and Rehabilitation wing with a hydra pool and mobility gardens. The new hospital also includes 3 levels of basement carparks with 200 spaces and a further 300 spaces in a multi-storey carpark on Angas Street.
The city environs were considered during the design process, as the Hospital gains multiple viewpoints not only from the ground plane but also from tall neighbouring buildings. It was important to express the building in the overall city skyline, as well as to give it its own identity.
