Professor Marie Bashir Centre

Camperdown, New South Wales

Under One Roof

The Professor Marie Bashir Centre at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital was a collaboration between the NSW Government, Sydney Local Health District, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney. (Brain & Mind Research Institute)

The six-storey centre integrates many of Sydney’s mental health services under one roof, including the eating disorder services for the first time. Treatment facilities include: 73 beds with capacity for future expansion; a six-bed short stay unit; a ground floor assessment unit; physical therapies suite; a dedicated adolescent and youth services unit; acute adult inpatient services, including capacity to manage mothers and babies in a defined pod; a high dependency unit; as well as seven beds dedicated for the University of Sydney for translational research.

The purpose-built centre provides a contemporary, warm environment featuring: brightly coloured walls with images of Sydney locations; landscaped courtyard with panoramic views; and break out areas for staff, patients and visitors. STH completed this project in collaboration with peckvonhartel architects.

STH provided Health Architecture and Planning services through the Functional Briefing, Concept Design, Schematic Design and Design Finalisation stages. STH were also responsible for delivery of the interiors through to completion.

“The design will help patients overcome their fears about being in hospital. There’s a sense of openess, a sense of colour and there’s a sense of hope"

Bill Kaloudis, Director
