Mater Private Hospital Springfield

Springfield, Queensland

A New Façade

STH in a Joint Venture with Brisbane Architects PDT (PDT+STH) delivered the new $85 million private hospital in Springfield, Queensland for Mater Health as part of Springfield Land Corporations 52 hectare health and wellness precinct - Health City Springfield Central.

PDT+STH completed full master plan services and initial design works for the new 80 bed private hospital in 2013 with the focus of developing the layout and functional relationships of the new facility. New façade designs were completed in June 2014 to align with Mater Health’s vision for the building to be a unique, benchmark facility for the future development of Health City Springfield.

The five level, 10,000 m² stage one facility provides a range of medical and surgical services to the growing Springfield community including four operating theatres, inpatient wards, a day surgery unit and medical imaging services. A new cancer centre, supported by $21.4 million in Australian Government funding, will be operated by Radiation Oncology Queensland and provide 15 medical oncology treatment bays and a linear accelerator.

While the main built form is calm and tectonic, the curved perforated screen is the crowning element that changes with the light and the time of day, with either the levels of transparency or backlighting at night.

“It was a great feeling to be able to open the doors and have patients through on day one. The systems just turned on and worked. A real world outcome for the design, and it met the brief. We’re all very proud of the facility.”

Joanna Vasiliou, Director of Built Environment for Mater

"STH have provided us with a great deal of confidence due to their leadership and team having superior knowledge in the health sector."

Stephen Willis, Director Built Environment / Program Director Mater Hospital Springfield Project, Information & Infrastructure Division

“Patients love it, the room quality, the ability to control the room environment, along with the mix of the physical space and the access to services makes them comfortable and happy.”

Fritha Mackay, Director of Mater Private Hospital Springfield
