Casey Hospital Expansion Project

Berwick, Victoria

Working as part of the Plenary Health consortium, STH undertook the Master Planning, design and documentation of this significant expansion of the Casey Hospital, in Berwick, Victoria. The $135 million project was managed by the Victorian Health and Human Services Building Authority in partnership with Monash Health.

The 13,000 m² expansion – one of the first successful expansions of an operating hospital public-private partnership (PPP) in Australia – includes a new six-storey tower of 128 inpatient beds, 12 intensive care beds, and 20 surgical day/short stay beds. Four new operating theatres and a central sterilising supply department connects back into the existing hospital, with a refurbished day surgery of two additional theatres. It also includes upgraded pharmacy, pathology and back-of-house areas, more than 300 new staff and public car parks, and new education and training spaces for Monash University.

Construction was completed in early 2020, providing additional intensive care unit (ICU) bed capacity to help respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project provided the opportunity to create a new look and entrance to the hospital, with a new foyer and new canopy. A shimmering aluminium canopy of pink/red hues connects back to the existing brickwork and the local vernacular and signifies the new entry and extends into the foyer ceiling. The signature element at the entry is the Monash University education hub, which provides a student hub with lecture theatre, social hub spaces and tutorial rooms for medical and nursing students. The design showcases a folded façade with a café under. The tower is deliberately simple in its form with curtain wall glass, to provide a backdrop to the education hub and canopy.

“We are very excited about the opening of this new space, which will enrich the student experience and facilitate the training of our next generation of medical and allied health professionals.”

Associate Professor Sally Ayoub, Director of Undergraduate Medical Education, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences.

"The new Monash University Education Space at Casey Hospital will enhance the student experience and facilitate training of medical, nursing and allied health students. Students on placement have access to a range of modern facilities to further their learning and discovery, including work areas, tutorial rooms, open plan social hub, clinical skills laboratory and lecture theatres."
